The New “Liquid Gold”
Webinar Description
This will be a discussion about the “new” liquid gold…which is urine. Both providers and laboratories have identified the DNA/RNA range of CPT codes as valuable sources for high reimbursement. The specimen of “the moment” is urine. Health plans and even CMS have millions of dollars of monthly spend on these codes due to the lack of edits in place. However, there are new policies available that speak to the utilization of molecular syndromic panels for infectious disease pathogen testing, which if enforced, could force providers to move on to the next scheme. We will review these policies, discuss the potential for “turning on edits”, and give examples of incorrect billing behavior. Additionally, we will explain how we leveraged the LCD’s companion coding article to carefully craft our denials to avoid “plan-directed care” overturns. We will also present our observations, experience, and actions taken as providers began to adjust their billing behavior in response to our claims denials, how we use data and other tools to “stay ahead of the curve”, and how to apply the applicable policies to all other infectious disease processes which are also vulnerable to abusive billing/coding behavior.
